They chose to build her on the hill with a sea view.
It was the 9th century when they built her on Benacantil.
The fortress overviewed the whole town.
She protected them and was so magnificent.
In the 13th century the Castile forces took her from the Muslims.
And named her Santa Barbara.
Now in the 21st century she’s still Santa Barbara.
And she still overviews royally over the Mediterranean.
When you look in a distance, you just admire her.
When you decide to climb her, you realize with your whole existence her true charm and somehow end up there - in the Middle Ages.
You imagine the battles.
You imagine her keepers.
You imagine the knights who walked where you’re walking right now.
And just like this you end up on the top - La Toretta - where your breath stops!
You feel like you can see the whole world - the civilization and the sea, the infinity…
A true oasis and your daydream begins…
I was a princess.
I was there - on top, La Toretta, seeing the whole world. It was in the palm of my hand.
I could feel the footsteps behind me.
The echo of the armors.
Far away but still so close.
A few centuries away. And yet here. And now - in my mind - in my daydream.
I was loosing myself in thoughts.
There was something in the air.
Of the place, of the time, of the people.
Suddenly something scared me.
It was him - taking me back to reality.
March 9th 2017.
When I turned 24.
He took me back with a hug that will stay in Santa Barbara’s history…
I do not know how much time had passed.
Seconds, minutes, hours, days, years and centuries.
This place capsules the whole entire time itself.
And gives it to the people who walk where the knights did.
You just have to let yourself feel it - time, history, beauty…
P.S. If my short story and photos capture my daydream, then the video project that we made with Julian Georgiev, shows my walk around the top of Santa Barbara in a different way ;)
Till next time,
